Alpharetta, GA – Student volunteers from ‘Chess for a Cause’ organized a chess session on Monday, June 19, 2017, at Crabapple Senior Center. The introductory session was aimed at creating brain awareness and interest in chess as a means way to achieve balanced exercise for the brain.
Ms Heidi Sowder, center manager at Crabapple Senior Center was present to support the event, she said “The Crabapple seniors enjoyed challenging their brains and learning something new! They also appreciated the gift of the chess set. It will allow them to practice what they learned.”
Introductory chess session started with a presentation on why chess is important for seniors today. The game was explained through video, and hands on practice. Session ended with a tournament chess set donated to allow seniors to continue playing (courtesy US Chess Trust).
This session was specifically organized as part of the Alzheimer’s and Brain awareness month. Chess for a Cause team while trying to increase the awareness and importance of brain exercises for healthy living is also supporting Longest Day fundraiser for Alzheimer’s research.
“Chess for a Cause”, is a non-profit association formed by high school students as a first step towards using chess to help alleviate and reverse the effects of aging-related dementia in adults. This summer Chess for a Cause team is planning provide chess sets to senior homes across metro Atlanta.
The small step by Chess for a Cause team to increase brain awareness among seniors and to provide balanced exercises has reached hundreds of seniors and is expected to grow in fall with participation from enthusiastic kids from other schools joining the movement. Their efforts to make our communities age-friendly are getting recognition from Department of Human Services link.
